movie review - Nice Guys

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2017.05.02

I loved this movie. It's about two LA detectives caught up in the sleaze of the 1970's porn scene. I won't go too much into the plot because in some ways its blend of seriousness and humor is difficult to relate and may actually not be terribly relevant. Instead, this is a story about two characters, each unhappy in his way, who find a kind of peace despite enormous liabilities and set-backs. It's a buddy movie in which the buddies don't merely find a way to play off their differences but actually function. OK, one does so by returning to alcohol after a dry stint, but I didn't say this was a redemption story. The entire setting and style of the thing is perfect, the dialogue is often great, the at times gut-punch humor is brilliant... This movie exceeded my expectations.

Strongly recommended. A favorite.
