movie review - Trollhunter

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2011.10.02

This is a .. fantasy movie? about trolls in Norway and the people who hunt them. Following a young film crew into the high, near-arctic wilderness, we watch a professional trollhunter deal with a set of ever-larger quarry. Soon the crew is drawn into close contact with the monsters, some of which are truly gigantic.

I quite enjoyed everything about this, from the tragic death in the film crew to the bumbled handling of events by a government minister to the really clever ways they integrated the CGI trolls into the scenes. The plot moves along nicely, the actions and words of the characters make a lot of sense, and I can't wait to share it with my son some day.

Recommended.

I'm constantly amazed at how difficult it is to break free of the straitjacket of the immediately urgent.
