Sundays is for voting

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2010.07.10

Like some European countries, Japan confines voting in its federal elections to Sundays. I approve.

I also wholeheartedly endorse anything that leads to a cessation of the various politicians riding around in cars with megaphones and speakers. But everywhere we went today, there were people queued for the polls. It's good to see that the Japanese turn out in what seems to be significant numbers. I could only wish that their elections would result in a stable, productive government. A tall order, I know. I just hate to see my adopted country go through the same sort of thing as my home land.

rand()m quote

I feel fortunate that I enjoyed the blandishments of modernity. I had hip replacement and root canal. I was able to travel on airplanes. I was able to take cheap food for granted. I went to the movies. I enjoyed rock 'n' roll. And now I'm ready to move on.
