movie review - Munich

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2007.09.19

This is a story assassination during the Cold War era. It's not strictly US-Russian, but rather Israel projecting its power by eliminating the spy networks of rivals such as the Palestinians. It's original material but feels rushed, with some things being given too much time but almost everything jumping along at break-neck speed. There are attempts at insight and understanding but they feel a bit tacked-on and underwhelming compared to the bloodshed and the way that the team folds up on itself toward the end. The cast is great, I didn't care for the tone and pacing.

Also, the treatment of a female ally at one point was unnecessarily lurid and sexist. This haunts one of the survivors but even this feels inauthentic.

Not recommended.
