movie review - Last Night

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 1999.07.16

I'd wanted to see this one for ages, and wasn't disappointed. It's about a string of characters who are living out the last hours of the doomed Earth. What's gone wrong, no one says, but the end is clearly at hand because the Sun keeps getting stronger as the clock approaches midnight, and the thin remnant of survivors gets thinner and meaner as time wears on. It's very entertaining, and had me pondering what I'd do in that situation. I was amused.

This is a very Canadian film, and I mean that in flavour (not as a negative connotation). If you're Canadian, you know what I mean; watchable, but familiar. When I mentioned it to my brother, he was able to successfully guess some of the plot elements immediately.

Recommended.

rand()m quote

Selfish leaders increase risk by placing themselves first. It's a fundamental mistake to assume that what is good for us personally is mutually exclusive to what is good for everyone. That kind of zero-sum game is for cowards, and in the end, we all pay the price for this type of latent, toxic leadership.
