movie review - Hurly Burly

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 1999.07.18

Hurly Burly is about a Hollywood casting agent, his partner/roomate, and his friends. The gang thrives on cocaine, abusive sex with a string of women, and hurtling around Mulholland. Cell phones, BMWs, all the usual yuppie stereotypes are in full effect.

This film is longer that it should be. It's also a fairly miserable episode, which doesn't help with the scenes that drag. What's more, I'm frankly tired of watching Palminteri play the same role.

That said, Penn gives an amazing performance, here. And Meg Ryan's stripper/party girl is fairly astounding, as well. If you're a fan of either, this may be a worthwhile watch. Other than that, I'd skip it.

Not recommended.
