hiking in Hokkaido

The hotel is pretty strict about tattoos in their onsen and pool, so while Mari and the kids went to the pool, I hiked down to the lake. I first went to an observatory, then a distant beach. It was ten kilometers, all in. The weather is such a dramatic improvement over Tokyo I'm practically giddy. (Text continues below photos.)
After that we had a superb lunch at a Bavarian restaurant. From there we visited a modest bear zoo.
From there, we went horseback riding.
By the end of that, it was the end of the afternoon so we raced into town to see if we could find anything open. But it was even worse than last night. We found some curry-soup that Mari believes was authentic and were happy to have that.
We're really enjoying this place despite the oddities around eateries.
