movie review - Safe House

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2024.06.15

This is an action flick about a young CIA operative who mans a "safe house" that goes disused week after week. Suddenly, a high-value asset is brought to the safe house, followed almost immediately by an invasion by unknown parties.

I enjoyed this early on, but its various problems begin to wear as it progresses. It has a superb cast but it's a bit too paint-by-numbers in its approach, with a story that is too predictable, especially given the cast. Oh, you have Brendan Gleesan? The action and the interplay between the lead and the major asset he's supposed to be protecting carries a lot of this movie where it otherwise doesn't have a lot of substance or anything particular to say.

Not recommended.

It may be that when we no longer know what to do we have come to our real work, and that when we no longer know which way to go we have come to our real journey. The mind that is not baffled is not employed. The impeded stream is the one that sings.
