movie review - Furiosa

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tachikawa, 2024.06.15

The Girl and I saw this in an IMAX cinema today. It was surprisingly well made, with nuanced characters (and also cartoonish ones where needed) and an engaging story that threaded together a number of ideas and motivations. Naturally, seeing it on the big screen really does justice to the excellent cinematography. There were several nods to the movies from the 20th Century in this one, with clever additions to the road war tactics that we enjoyed. There were a couple of minor plot gaps that stuck in my mind, but that was more than offset by the clever plot points in general, the pace and tone, and the terrific work in support of it all by the actors. I especially liked the performance from the fellow playing the villain in his fake nose. He was played like a brilliant but incompetent megalomaniac and narcissist whose mishandling of events constantly causes problems.

They had an interesting thing in the end credits. They showed a recap of "Fury Road" to remind viewers of the events of that movie, which followed this tale.

Recommended. Especially if you can see it in the cinema.

rand()m quote

Naturally the common people don't want war: Neither in Russia, nor in England, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, or a fascist dictatorship, or a parliament, or a communist dictatorship. Voice or no voice, the people can always be brought to the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the peacemakers for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same in any country.
