watching Little Miss Sunshine
the journal of Michael Werneburg
twenty-seven years and one million words
I watched this, a favorite of mine, with my son tonight. I was impressed that he could guess how a couple of scenes were going to play out, but I was more impressed that he was able to aptly summarize the theme: being yourself and having some fun and not getting lost in one "beauty contest" after another.
And boy, do some of the characters in this thing get lost. Seeing it again after so long was a treat, but I was really impressed with the ease with which the excellent cast get their characters across. The writing and direction were clearly on point, but the cast was notably operating so well together it all looks effortless and natural - they feel like a real family.
