movie review - Free Guy

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2022.12.25

What can you say about movies you see on airplane equipment? You won't get all of the dialog because of announcements, and you won't see everything because of the condition of the screen (and random side lighting). And the sound system usually falls between OK and painful. But then you see a movie like this on the plane and all that doesn't matter.

It's an original story about a character in a FPS game who comes to realize that he is in fact just a character. Snapping suddenly out of his routine, he begins to explore the world only to notice The Girl. She's a high-level character in this gun-slinging world, and he latches on to her for help. She dismisses him, telling him to go away and level up. He does so, being downright chivalrous as he does, and becomes a sensation in the real world as he does. That done, they team up, determined to change things both in- and out-of-the-game.

I enjoyed the story, the characters, the mix of real- and game-world, and the outcomes.

Recommended.

...and when you try to get some, it surely can be hard. There's always trouble waiting, when you leave your own back yard.
