movie review - Knives Out

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2021.08.15

This is a whodunnit set in a mansion. The head of the family is dead, and all of his children had a stake in his death. The police are on the scene, but a famous private detective is also brought along - but we don't know who hired him. As the story unfolds it turns out there's a lot of cash in play and that these fine folk will do whatever they have to do to grab it.

It's very well written, with a plot that very nearly makes sense and very nearly resonates emotionally. Recommended. For an entertaining two hours that feels ever so slightly off.

rand()m quote

It has always seemed strange to me...The things we admire in men, kindness and generosity, openness, honesty, understanding and feeling, are the concomitants of failure in our system. And those traits we detest, sharpness, greed, acquisitiveness, meanness, egotism and self-interest, are the traits of success. And while men admire the quality of the first they love the produce of the second.

—John Steinbeck, Cannery Row
