movie review - Army of the Dead

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kokubunji, 2021.05.27

This is a style-over-substance heist movie set in a fictional Las Vegas that's been over-run with zombies. The zombies are now evolving into something new so the government's going to nuke Las Vegas (to the satisfaction of literally everyone globally). Before that happens, a great amount of money has to be retrieved from a casino vault by the gangster owner of the casino.

It's a zombie flick, so you go into it expecting betrayal, gore, stupidity, infighting... and a twisty ending. And this delivers. You also expect a strong ensemble cast of disparate characters and bow howdy does this deliver. The loopy German safe-cracker. The dyke chopper pilot. The latina chick. The insider with an ulterior motive. Chef's kiss, baby: brain off, ice in the tumbler let's do this.

Recommended.

I am, somehow, less interested in the weight and convolutions of Einstein's brain than in the near certainty that people of equal talent have lived and died in cotton fields and sweatshops.
