les.net to the rescue

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Kawasaki, 2020.06.07

When I was heading to Canada nearly ten years ago, I realized that I'd need a Canadian phone number to support my job search. I did a bit of digging around, and soon found les.net, which offered a very cheap clean number in the 647 area code. By clean, I mean it hadn't been in circulation before and used by who knows whom. I used that number for years before eventually giving it up in favor of a local telco account.

But now we're doing the reverse. I've transfered my telco account to les.net, where for ~$6/month I have any incoming texts forwarded to my email. This is particularly important because of the use of two factor authentication on various websites around the world. The site for instance where I host emuu.net and werenburg.ca (I'm down to just two domains!), the site where I host the websites, and even one of my banks all require a phone number to which they can send 2FA texts. I'm not even going to try to use a Japanese phone number with those services.

It's gone well, so now I'm doing the same for Mari's phone number. The cutover is planned for the day after they leave.
