goodbye 32 Spokes
the journal of Michael Werneburg
twenty-seven years and one million words
I'm winding down my activities with "32 Spokes", the cycling safety advocacy group I belonged to for six and a half years. When I started it was a group of 4-6 people that met every month and talked about things they wanted to do. When I left there were a dozen regular members and we had a distinct identity from the city-wide "Cycle Toronto". This was supported by a website, spaces in Twitter and Facebook, printed t-shirts, and most importantly, by spots in the media. We were in newspapers ranging from the local Beaches freebie to "Toronto Life" (somewhat incredibly). We're using project management software and instant-messaging software and we had assigned roles to each other to effectively separate duties and avoid duplication. We routinely attended public meetings hosted by the city to press our case, and had dealings with other advocates across the city. We played a part in the last city election, and routinely interact with the city's politicians. It was a real thing!
The last stage involves getting the website off my personal server, and to disentangle myself from email groups and the IM app I introduced. It'll be good. 8^)
