movie review - Mission: Impossible - Fallout

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2020.05.12

This strangely-named movie is one of the best thriller/action films I've ever seen. I think it's also the only "Mission: Impossible" movie I've seen. It's set primarily in Europe, where a dangerous terrorist is being transported with the apparent intent to exchange him for plutonium cores used in nuclear weapons. Needless to say, things go badly and now the nuclear cores have to be recovered before they are used.

Smart, tough, and fast-paced, this movie uses its stars to the fullest effect, with several of them apparently doing all their own stunts (which are in some cases quite nuts) and doing their own running in pursuit of the bad guys. It's very well put together and despite being the nth in a movie chain dating back to the prior millennium, it avoids any indulgence over the characters' joint past.

Strongly recommended.

Illusions commend themselves to us because they save us pain and allow us to enjoy pleasure instead. We must therefore accept it without complaint when they sometimes collide with a bit of reality against which they are dashed to pieces.
