movie review - Bumblebee

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2019.09.25

This past few years sure has produced a lot of prequels and spinoffs. My son wanted to see this "Transformers" movie and so we did. I found it a huge let-down in a number of ways. First, the titular character always had a minor facilitator role, he's the interaction point between the Autobots and the young human that befriends them. Here he's the star and apparently a scout for the Autobots who are already on Earth and .. you know what this movie is such a dull and rushed mess I won't even bother fleshing out that thought. This is the wrong story and I don't think it even needed to be told. The characters are not fleshed out, there's little conflict or purpose for the struggle that exists. You feel nothing watching this, in the style of the super-hero movies.

The "Transformers" movies are by now such a disgrace I regret seeing this.

I've said that recently about a couple of other movies. It feels like I need an "Avoid" category. This, that Solo movie, AI... Yes, I can feel it coming together.

Not recommended. Avoid.
