coyote on the street tonight

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Toronto, 2019.02.01

I ran into a coyote on the street tonight. This has happened before, but the difference was the beautiful state of the thing. It had a rich pelt, was lean without being at all scrawny, and was moving with an easy gait. I'm told they live in the cemetery nearby, but that's across two busy four-lane roads. I tried to wave down a couple of drivers who were heading the beast's way, but they didn't so much as look at me.

The fishermen know that the sea is dangerous and the storm terrible, but they have never found these dangers sufficient reason for remaining ashore.
