movie review - Kong Skull Island

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Toronto, 2018.04.30

This is a re-telling of the King Kong story, but with Brie Larson along for some reason. There's not really a lot to work with in this story, so they layer on a lot - and I mean a lot - of monster encounters. It's set in the days following the Vietnam war and there are some references to that, but the movie just sort of plays out as if it can't quite settle on its themes and tone. I guess that's hard when half of what the audience will see isn't there. But then, why make this movie?

It's got a superb cast but as I say they seem to have neither the script nor on-set experience to let them work. In fact, I'd love to see Jackson, Reilly, and Huddlestone in something together again. Something not CGI/Superhero.

Not recommended.

rand()m quote

Selfish leaders increase risk by placing themselves first. It's a fundamental mistake to assume that what is good for us personally is mutually exclusive to what is good for everyone. That kind of zero-sum game is for cowards, and in the end, we all pay the price for this type of latent, toxic leadership.
