movie review - Jurassic World

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2017.08.04

My kids love these dinosaur movies, so we watched this - which must be our third this year?

It's a whole new dinosaur adventure, with a new generation of lead actors to mug through some stiff dialog before the dinosaurs get free and raise hell. This time, the main monster really pulls out all the stops: it's gigantic, ferocious, intelligent, and has genes that somehow let its ten tonne weight vanish. Perfect on-screen camouflage, you know. I mean, it sure is cheap to draw!

The characters are obnoxious people with obvious limitations that let them bumble through the plot and misunderstand one another. There are kids in the mix because .. Jurassic Park. They're in the "care" of two glaring narcissists and are soon on their own with the "raptors" and the aforementioned monster.

Not recommended. Looking back, I think the first one remains the only good one. Although there was that scene in the third one(?) with the trailers where the only likeable, heroic character dies saving the usual cast (of narcissists). No one even mentions his sacrifice.

rand()m quote

I feel fortunate that I enjoyed the blandishments of modernity. I had hip replacement and root canal. I was able to travel on airplanes. I was able to take cheap food for granted. I went to the movies. I enjoyed rock 'n' roll. And now I'm ready to move on.
