movie review - Transformers

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2017.06.30

If you're going to watch a Transformers movie, let it be this one. It's a throw-back to a time before financial crises and calamitous presidential campaigns and crippling malaise. When movie audiences were undemanding and people didn't yet shudder when they heard the name Michael Bay. Alone in all of the Transformers movies in not being a self-serious endless sequence of mean stupidity, it's also the only one where you work out which of the alien transforming sentient robots you're looking at.

Recommended. For fans of '80s cartoons, parents with easily-amused children, and anyone with absolutely nothing else to watch.

Illusions commend themselves to us because they save us pain and allow us to enjoy pleasure instead. We must therefore accept it without complaint when they sometimes collide with a bit of reality against which they are dashed to pieces.
