movie review - The Last Witch Hunter

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Toronto, 2017.02.06

This is a Demons-and-Angels bit of Fantasy about an immortal "Witch Hunter" who, in the modern time, gets wrapped up in an effort by (un-Hunted?) Witches to bring about the end times. It's got a great cast and the tone is consistent but at the price of being a bit on the self-serious side.

I enjoyed the combination of characters, sets, and action and while it's hella CGI-heavy that is the times we live in I'm afraid. This movie doesn't try to be too intelligent, but rather feels written for the strengths of the lead actors, and I think it works. There's certainly good chemistry between the leads. I could have done with a little less chasing through old skirmishes but I supposed that's how it goes when your central character is immortal.

Recommended.

I'm constantly amazed at how difficult it is to break free of the straitjacket of the immediately urgent.
