movie review - Arrival

twenty-seven years and one million words

Jon and I went to the local cinema to watch this sci-fi flick about first contact with aliens. The aliens in question are radically non-human in the sense of physiology (as much as we see) and outlook and language. In fact, it's the language that is the key difference - because the alien's language causes the re-wiring of the human brain into something that has a very different sense of time. We're able, in short, to see forward in time as well as backward if we can master the language.

This is one of my favorite sci-fi flicks. It's got great ideas, is beautifully made, has a no-nonsense plot, and fairly transports you to the scenario. I really enjoyed it.

A favorite. Strongly recommended.
