long dive by a bird of prey

I saw a bird of prey take a long straight dive with its wings folded. It fell with surprising speed, arrow-straight and fast fast fast. It didn't connect with any particular prey, so I suppose it missed or aborted its attack, but it was still very impressive.
All the more for the setting: our neighborhood in a fairly central location within a city of 6.6 million. The same neighborhood where I've seen a fox in the past five years, and there are apparently coyote.
