my home town and the underground railway

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Toronto, 2013.03.10

It turns out that my home town was the northern end of the "underground railway", something that my mum has mentioned several times over the years. Today is "Harriet Tubman Day", named for the black American woman who first extended the route for southern black runaway slaves to St. Catharines, and who personally rescued many slaves. It's also the 100th anniversary of her death.

Today, St. Catharines is a rusted hulk of whatever it once was, but it's great to see that good things have happened there over the years.

rand()m quote

It's difficult in times like these: ideals, dreams and cherished hopes rise within us, only to be crushed by grim reality. It's a wonder I haven't abandoned all my ideals, they seem so absurd and impractical. Yet I cling to them because I still believe, in spite of everything, that people are truly good at heart.
