movie review - Kick-Ass

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2012.01.22

This is the story of a non-super young man who takes it upon himself to become a crime-fighting superhero. He quickly sustains several injuries. He then undergoes treatment that somehow changes his nervous system and he winds up with low sensitivity to pain. So encouraged, he redoubles his efforts and winds up tangling with the mob.

They respond by trying to kill him, and he is only saved when two other crime-fighters show up. One's an adult - a disgraced copy. The other's his eleven-year-old daughter. They encourage him to keep going, and in a roundabout way they are brought together once more to fight the mob boss and his countless minions.

I enjoyed the movie, though I think I saw trailers that showed a rather different story line. It's smart, it's not insanely unrealistic, and the ending worked.

Recommended.
