crossing the language barrier

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2011.06.17

Kenny's English is making the transition. Until now, his English has been heavily constrained by thinking in Japanese.

But it's come around. What was until maybe only two weeks ago a high-speed word salad is now surprisingly sophisticated. A sample from last month might have gone, "Going daddy blue Grandma house car." Now he says things like, "Today I went Barbara playtime; played ota-kun."
