a Brock Univerity professor is going to prison

twenty-seven years and one million words
One of my University professors is now in prison on a child pornography conviction. Another proud moment for Brock University.
According to an article in the local paper;
Keith J. Tinkler, 67, of St. Catharines, was discovered with 343 child pornography images on his home and work computer when police arrested him last year.
The court heard the married father of four grown children was using a real-time chat site on his home computer when he began communicating with an undercover police officer from Toronto.
Over the course of chatting, he sent the officer images of naked pubescent girls and of himself aroused. He also described graphic acts he wanted to see done to young girls.
Police found 117 child pornography images on the home computer and another 226 child pornography images and two child pornography movies on his computer at Brock, from which he has since retired.
As appalling as his behavior was, he was sentenced to only twenty months in prison. And I wouldn't be surprised if his long tenure as an employee of the province means that he gets to keep his pension.
Equally unimpressive is that Brock University had no clue that this was going on. I can only hope that the University institutes some simple checks for such material on their computers. Every large company in the world does this, and many other organizations like hospitals have figured out that this is worth doing. Why not Brock?
Here's an early entry I made when the fellow was arrested. It includes a response from Brock.
