grandparents

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

St. Catharines, 2010.11.22

This weekend my mother and I went looking for the tombstones of our grandparents. We were quite successful.

The same cemetery, it turns out, is now the "final resting place" of not only half of my mother's ancestors, but my father's parents as well. Upon arrival, we found the stone of my grandparents immediately. Finding my mum's grandmother took a while longer, but we found the eighty-year-old site eventually.

I like cemeteries. Not exactly an efficient use of space, but I've got a roll of film of tombstones and markers for halfthe family tree.

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
