crib's death

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Tokyo, 2009.06.21

Kenny's been steadily growing too large for his crib, and now the time seems to have come. He just doesn't fit the thing, and puts up a fuss when placed in it.

So we've taken to putting him on a futon on the floor, which gives him a lot more room. I've done a bit of shopping for larger cribs, but they seem pretty cumbersome and I'm not really sure they add anything that he can't get just by sleeping on the floor.

With two exceptions. First, he won't "sleep crawl" all over the room if he's bound in a crib. He's only been on the futon a couple of nights but so far he's strayed off of the futon immediately every time he's been placed on it. The results are pretty funny when he turns up in some corner of the room or even out in the hallway.

small child asleep in corner of bedroom, away from the bedSecond, he won't be able to just get up and come running out of the room looking for us. The first time he did this it was pretty disconcerting. I mean as a parent you know the child's about, but when you've put him down to sleep you don't expect him to suddenly appear at your side, sniffling.

We're going to see how it goes with the futon for a while.
