the zoo

We went to the zoo over in Ueno. Ken was delighted. I think the boy's favourite animal was the lioness; at one point when he got away from his mum he raced back specifically to see the roaming lion.
The Ueno zoo is a great value; small kids (up to 12, I think) get in free of charge, and they've got a fairly large grounds (for Tokyo) in which you can see all sorts of well-made animal exhibits. They even had a building for nocturnal scenes, which I suppose means they keep it well lit at night.
Parents get in for something like $7. The place was so large that Ken fell asleep halfway through. It was good timing, really, as it gave us a natural place to cut the visit short and leave the rest for another visit.
The polar bears were a bit scraggly and underfed, but I suppose that's probably true in the wild these days as well, sadly.
