movie review - Smokin' Aces

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Tokyo, 2008.06.11

This is the story of a thoroughly unlikable bit-player in the criminal underworld who's decided to start working with the authorities. Every ridiculously over-the-top assassin in the country turns up to collect the fat payment offered for his execution. These all are run through absurd plot lines and frankly embarrassing attempts at cool and slick and sophisticated. I ran out of patience with this one fairly early on and skipped along until it reached its silly ending just to see it through. I don't really know why I do this, it never pays off.

Not recommended.

rand()m quote

For a long time I was very bitter that the people who controlled the means of anybody ever hearing my songs were never gonna play them. They only favored music that I specifically and particularly hated, and I wanted them dead. Suddenly, there was another avenue. I started hearing my stuff coming out of bars and then it started to happen little by little -- a movie song here or a TV ad there.
