meeting Jonathan Culp

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 2002.10.06

I caught up, briefly, with my old (very old) friend Jonathan Culp, today. He and I were classmates between 1975 - 1979, and I don't think I'd seen him from then 'til today. He was hosting the film/video portion of something called "Canzine"; a place where writers of 'zines gathered to push their wares and try to out-cool each other. It was held at the Big Bop on Queen St (right in the heart of Canada's most pretentious mile).

Jonathan himself was frighteningly little-changed. It was like the 8-year-old I last new had grown taller and older but had otherwise adopted his character, mannerisms, and face at that early age. We plan on meeting again when he's not putting on one of his shows.

If you want to build a ship, don't drum up people together to collect wood and don't assign them tasks and work, but rather teach them to long for the endless immensity of the sea.
