movie review - Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Vancouver, 2001.09.10

This is Kevin Smith's latest flick. This is, along with he original Clerks, his best stuff. It's a lightweight piece, but both funny and original. The humour begins before the title credits roll, (with a two year old Jay learning to swear) and includes the priceless line "that may be the worst idea since Greedo shooting first". You'd probably have to be as nearly lost in certain pop culture as Smith is to get that one, but fortunately many of us are. Towards the end of the film the direction and acting get a little stilted, and it becomes hard to stay in the story. And the constant mugging by some of the guests gets pretty irritating. The movie-making, in short, is a little iffy, but no one else is making movies with this sense of fun, and for that I recommend it.

Recommended.
