movie review - Final Fantasy

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Vancouver, 2001.07.14

This is the first completely computer-animated movies I've seen. Aside from the details relevant to the animation (and that is generally excellent, with some wonky problems such as a surprisingly inanimate supporting cast), the movie is a bit of a disappointment. Most of the material is very familiar to fans of Anime, nearly to the level of cliche. The plot suffers from that curious Japanese tendency of playing second fiddle to the dramatic elements. We get lots of characters worth watching, lots of tension, but no thread to the story and a few great big unexplained elements.

It was interesting to watch, none-the-less, just from the point of view of the action and animation. We saw it on the IMAX screen, and it was overwhelming.

Recommended.
