the PM is a dunce

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Sydney, 2000.09.26

When Kathy Freeman - the Aborginal athlete who lit the torch in the opening ceremonies - won the women's 400m final yesterday, she ran a victory lap with the Australian and Aborginal flags. A lot of people are looking at it as a positive thing for white/Aborginal relations (code word 'reconciliation'), because she's a hero and she's from the most marginalised group in the country. The Prime Minister made the statement today that her victory would have nothing to do with reconciliation. Stupid bugger. If there's one thing that history should be able to teach a prime minister, it's that intransigent anglophone mutterings in the face of a nation's struggle don't do nothin'.

He seems to appreciate the Australians' worship of sports heros less than I do.

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.
