movie review - Saving Private Ryan

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 1999.11.12

A war movie that seems real. Probably the first one I've ever imagined that depicted the real thing correctly. Stunningly awful depictions.

Aside from its setting, filming (brilliantly hand-held camerawork), and acting (aside from Hank's usual dramatic overacting, the cast was superb), the tale is pretty straightforward. It's about a captain and the small band of troops he leads to retrieve a paratrooper who is the lone survivor of four brothers sent to fight in WWII. Along the way, almost everyone dies.

Recommended.
