movie review - Mars Attacks!

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-eight years and a million words

Toronto, 1999.10.05

This is a sci-fi flick about an invasion by aliens from Mars. They're weird little freaks, and they're here to kick ass. Set in various locales across the US, it depicts humans as a stupid, alcoholic race of incompetent primitives. The martians, by comparison, are an organized, sadistic race of nihilists.

This is great! Very funny. Very bizarre. Very Tim Burton. My brother pointed out how the Martians at one point capture a nuclear explosion using some kind of advanced device, then breath the resulting helium to make their voices funny.

Strongly recommended.

On the endless saga of Rob Ford, mayor of Toronto; "It shouldn't have had to come to this. I'm so tired of getting up every morning and wondering, 'What will it be today?' I'm so tired of giving the benefit of the doubt again and again, only to be let down again and again.... Somewhere a responsible adult has to appear, draw a bright moral line, tell the truth and say unequivocally what won't be tolerated. Somebody has to do the right thing."
