movie review - Rushmore

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 1998.10.02

This weird little number is about a love triangle between a private school student, his young teacher, and the wealthy father of some of the other students. Things break down into "war" between the two males. The whole thing is done with a snappy tone, good dialog, and sets that keep us grounded in the story. The kid's a high school student, and a delusional one at that. The direction is good enough that all of the actors turn in fine performances. This was made by the same guys that made "Bottle Rockets" and it shows in the self-deflating vibe, the glib characters, and the general madness.

Strongly recommended. I found the struggles of young Max very compelling, and the depression of his older rival and excellent counterpoint.
