movie review - Eat Drink Man Woman

the journal of Michael Werneburg

twenty-seven years and one million words

Toronto, 1997.01.25

This is a flick from Taiwan about a small family - a man and his three daughters. The movie is about the separation of the family as everyone finds someone to love. A kicker in the end, when the old boy marries the daughter of the old lady next door. The setting and the culture make for a change of pace, and the tale is certainly resonant for anyone who's left the nest or parents watching their kids do the same.

Recommended.

rand()m quote

In the wake of 9/11, we [in America] have made the decision as a society that we can never again create something in which we can take pride, for fear that someone will destroy it. Moreover, we must suppress any trace of individualism, lest someone have the desire to rise above the bland sameness that protects us. I have, alas, no idea how to recapture our courage.
