movie review - Star Wars: A New Hope
the journal of Michael Werneburg
twenty-seven years and one million words
This is a number about a young man who's swept up in big events when he buys a droid with a bad motivator. He winds up spear-heading a tiny but fierce rebellion against the galaxy-spanning empire that's crushing everyone around them. This is the film that brought us light-sabers, personal spaceships, "use the force", Darth Vader, Storm Troopers, and about a hundred standard movie bits and pieces that turn up everywhere.
This movie also single-handedly rescued Hollywood from a long decline and caused an explosion of movie theater construction. And it set an entire generation on a path of constant movie-watching (look how many thumbnail reviews I've written in the past month!) -- a real game-changer, it seems.
I was six when I first saw this one; it is responsible for my tastes in movies - what else can I say, I love it to this day.
Strongly recommended.
