In my Civilization game, I have a case where the Norwegians approach you after you build the Apollo project. They advise that they have found "an anomaly" near the south pole. If you build the South Pole Expedition "wonder" while running a well-rounded civilization, you have a successful voyage and come back with some thruster components for your spaceship. If you're running a more brutal warmongering civilization without much domestic development, you run the risk of a different outcome.
