movie review - Beverly Hills Cop

Kokubunji, 2026.03.13

We had MacDonalds take-out, and I suggested to the kids that we watch a movie on Netflix. We settled on this old cop buddy movie, and I have to say I was pleased with how well it's held up. It's about a Detroit officer who's trying make a splash with undercover work. His livid Police Chief is unimpressed, and he certainly doesn't seem to have his act together as he damages property and fails to make arrests. But he's a charming fast-talker and when a friend is killed in front of him he uses his vacation time to investigate in distant Los Angeles.

He runs into trouble with the LAPD almost immediately, and winds up partnered with two straight-laced white guys (one young and brash; the other older and divorced). And it's from here that the classic cop buddy movie kicks off.

It's an engaging flick with a tight plot and engaging dialog. It gets a touch heavier than you might expect with some characters taken captive by the drug traffickers. I suspect that this was influenced by material like Miami Vice, which was then current. Certainly, the gun-play at the end has that feeling.

Recommended.
