OneDrive nuked a drive

Kokubunji, 2026.10.13

On the weekend I discovered that one of my twin internal hard drives had lost about two Terabytes of photos and videos taken by the family and me over the past 25 years. I had the other twin plus an air-gapped set of drives and an offline but attached drive and all had copies of the lost data, but was concerned. It turned out that a cloud backup service had nuked the drive - and it wasn't even one I use, just something installed automatically by Microsoft on my Windows boot.

This is the second time this year that something like this has happened, so I have decided to simply use a read-only, one way replication of my own to a "cheap and deep" service here in Japan. Enough is enough! Claude helped me set it up in twenty minutes, and now I have a service running on my Linux boot. When the upload is done, I'll rebuild the partitions with Linux-native filesystems and be done with any pretense that Windows is a stable and productive environment.
