strange kanji for a hot planet
Kokubunji, 2025.12.08
Oddly enough, the Japanese kanji for the planet Mercury mean "water star".
木星
At first, I wondered if the kanji assigned to each planet was in the same order that the same set of kanji were assigned to the days of the week but .. of course not. Mind you, that would have made Mercury the "moon star", so I can see why they avoided that. The inner-most planets, aside from Earth, are named for the "five elements" of ancient thought - fire, water, earth, metal, and wood.
