movie review - Day of the Dead

Kokubunji, 2025.09.28

This is a 1985 zombie movie, and the third in the trilogy by the original zombie director, George Romero. It's set in Florida that has been completely taken over by zombies. Aside from a small team of scientists and soldiers studying the zombies on an island in Florida, there is no sign that anything has survived in the dear old USA.

The dysfunction between the scientists and the soldiers that are protecting them gets steadily worse as things happen like one of the scientists purposefully infecting the leader of the soldiers to study the effects of his work. There's also a story line about a zombie that the scientist actually reaches, turning him into a sort of shattered but intelligent character who can use tools (like handguns, it turns out).

The strong female lead is one of only three characters you'd actually want to know, the other two being a pilot and a radio specialist. Their fate is different from that of the others, who perish in the hellish camp. But when we last see them it's fishing on a beach with no zombies in sight. But, then what...
