so the horizon is only 4.4 kilometers away

For a story I'm writing, I decided to see how far a person on the ratlines of an olde-timey sailing ship could see to the horizon. I found an interesting explanation. If the sailor's eyes were eight meters above the water, the horizon would appear a bit more than 10 kilometers away. Someone standing on the edge of the water could only see about 4.4km!
Thanks, math!
