movie review - Scarface
the journal of Michael Werneburg
twenty-eight years and a million words
This seminal movie has a problem: you cannot now watch it without thinking of many, many other titles that have come along since then plotting the same course. The up-and-coming young gangster rises to the top, is consumed by the drugs and the general evil, and descends into a disastrous ending. It's also now a bit dated in some respects. But credit where it is due; this thing tells a story of a egotistical asshole who knows what he wants, and in so doing it both establishes a genre and shows the American dream in reality: take what you want or you're a chump.
Recommended.
