the tourism crunch in Tokyo is real

Kokubunji, 2025.12.15

The Yamanote line was so crowded this evening that several people -- like about a dozen -- fell over when the driver had to slow. We were climbing the gentle rise into Shinjuku, and it was just a mild slowing, but people were so packed that it only took a couple off balance for the whole middle part of the train went down. The crowding is often terrible on these trains but the added bodies of the countless tourists in this part of the city sure ain't helping.

Come to think of it, I had decided not to board the train on account of it being so packed and knowing that another train was coming within two minutes. But the crowd carried me on and I somehow wound up stuck up against the door when it closed. That's Tokyo!
