movie review - caught stealing
Kokubunji, 2025.10.15
I'll give this movie one thing - it wasn't as dumb as it looked in the trailers. The weird ads, it being directed by the guy who did Requiem for a Dream, and the presence of the actor Matt Smith were what made me give it a chance and I was glad I did. It's a surprisingly gritty thing with an emotional undercurrent that you might not expect if you'd just watched the bonkers trailers. The body count is through the roof, and for an interesting change of pace we see inside the heads of all of the various bad guys. One of the little ironic flourishes in this piece is that in fact no one meant to steal anything.
I liked the simplicity of the story, the characters, the pacing, and the arc of the poor bugger of a main character.
